I am a freelance writer, originally from Peterborough, Ontario, now based in Penticton, British Columbia. I developed a love of writing from an early age, writing countless fantastical stories starring my friends and myself. I was never without pen and paper!
For as long as I can remember I have wanted to be a writer, but alas, oftentimes we must do what is necessary in order to eventually do what we love. To reach those heights we all dream of I pursued a post secondary education at Algonquin College in the Ottawa Valley where I received my diploma in Outdoor Adventure. Studies in the program included small business management and entrepreneurship, but mainly focused on developing hard skills in the outdoors. I worked as an outdoor guide in varying capacities for many years before furthering my education at Thompson Rivers University in British Columbia. It was there that I earned my Bachelor in Adventure Tourism Management, specializing in International Development, Business Management and Risk Management in Adventure and Travel applications. This education helped me develop skills in writing, marketing, business, and the outdoors, all of which come in extremely useful as a freelance writer!
For me, the biggest joy that comes from writing is being able to share the unknown. Often we learn the most about the world around us and ourselves by traveling. This is where my true passion lays. While conducting tourism development fieldwork for a small community in rural Chile in the spring of 2006, I had the opportunity to travel extensively throughout South America. During these travels I maintained a travel blog thoroughly detailing my experiences and sharing the joy of the unknown through my eyes. This was when I felt most in tune with my true self.
In 2011 I finally decided to get going and begin my career as a writer. I decided that if only 5 people liked what I wrote, than that was good enough. I just had to get my writing out there. Instead of a pen and paper, like in those early days, I picked up my keyboard and started pounding on the keys. I have since been actively writing as a weekly columnist for the Revelstoke Current online news source, a staff writer for Reved Quarterly, and a regular contributor to websites such as Get Rad Revelstoke, SnowSeekers Inc. and FestivalSeekers Inc. I find inspiration and creativity in everything I do. Although it seems most of my writing surfaces in Arts & Culture, Travel & Adventure, Environmental Issues, and Opinion. Those early goals of having a half dozen readers has been broken many times over with thousands tuning in regularly to see what my keyboard spews forth next.
My writing style has often been described as lyrical and very expressive. I often aim to use satire and humour to expose truth and provide a counterpoint to biased or misleading opinions. I use words like a painter uses a brush and I strive to clearly depict what I see and feel to my readers. I can always be found with a voice recorder and notebook, capturing moments and phrases to better build a written experience for others.
